aptitude used to clean up old packages by default, but I got
complaints about destroying user data, so now you have to enable
it explicitly by putting "Aptitude::Autoclean-After-Update true;"
in /etc/apt/apt.conf. I can't find anything in the current manpage
(for 0.4) that suggests this is done by default, but if there
is an indication that this is the case, it's a bug and should be
fixed.

Could you please point me at the section of the manpage that you
referred to previously, and/or confirm that it's gone/fixed in
version 0.4?

    Thanks,
  Daniel
