I try dbconfig-common about a year ago and found it unsatisfactory. 

I distantly recall it might be because of the way Wordpress does
multiple blogs. Each one needs a unique dbconfig setup. It's not handled
in one dbconfig.

I'll look into dbconfig-common again when I have the time.
