I also tried the same with a loopback dislk image - no success. I do exactlky what is documented, and have no idea how to investigate the problem further.
Let me know what I can try to give more help on solving this bug. Maybe the call to the external program should not be made in a way that analyhzingf problems is impossible, and there should be a way to keep the tmp data.
