Ahh... never heard of that setting before.  changing that worked.. thanks.

/etc/init.d/asterisk still has:

PIDFILE="/var/run/asterisk/asterisk.pid"

which needs changing manually (and perhaps should be in the default build) but it does seem to work as it is.

I guess you can close this bug.  Thanks for the help.
