Hello Christian,
I talked to Simon, and he will update the man page in question the
week after the next. What is the time schedule for passwd regarding
Etch? As passwd is not essential, the freeze on the 31 does not apply,
and an updated german man page should make it into etch, even if it
comes, lets say, in the first days of august?

No problem. Anyway, even if shadow is frozen, translation updates will be allowed. We did so already for sarge. And we'll take care to forward them upstream of course.

Actually, shadow is part of the base system, so the freeze will happen quite soon.

No, unless the maintainer takes care of doing so. This is actually the
same for regular translations....or po-debconf stuff.

Thats a pitty. At least for tetex Frank informs the translators when
the template has changed and the translations need updating. Also ddtp
used to send out update notifications when necessary. Ideally I'd
envison something like the Debian web page, where I could quickly scan for
translations requiring updates (preferably limited to my ones). Well,
I guess this goes way beyond this thread in a different wishlist bug.

This is among the goals we have for a centralized i18n/l10n infrastructure, yes
