I've found the http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=363014 since my last letter, so please ignore my question. Instead, may I suggest that at least an (obsolete) bundle of the sarge-era manpages of the gl calls be included as a separate package for use with post-sarge systems?
