There isn't any point to giving distributed-net its own user. As user daemon it already has full access to the /var/lib/distributed-net directory.

Usually daemons are given their own user id when they are exposed to the world and there is a danger that they could be compromised, giving the attacker access to the system with the rights user running the daemon. Running the daemon as its user in this case minimizes the amount of damage that an attacker could do. This does not apply to distributed-net since it is not exposed to the world as it only communicates with distributed.net's servers.
