The problem of rendering of indian languages has not gone completely. I just now discovered that if I install ttf-freefont package and go to http://te.wikipedia.org/ then the characters are displayed as blocks of 25cc. If I remove this ttf-freefont package then the characters are rendered fine. My system currently uses a mix of etch and sid packages. So I do not now if the problem goes away by upgrading completely to Sid. My system information is $dpkg -l ttf\* | grep ^ii ii ttf-bengali-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for the Bengali language ii ttf-bitstream-vera 1.10-5 The Bitstream Vera family of free TrueType f ii ttf-dejavu 2.7-2 Bitstream Vera fonts with additional charact ii ttf-devanagari-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for languages using the ii ttf-gujarati-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for the Gujarati languag ii ttf-indic-fonts 0.4.7.1 Metapackage for free Indian language fonts ii ttf-kannada-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for the Kannada language ii ttf-malayalam-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for the Malayalam langua ii ttf-opensymbol 2.0.2-3 The OpenSymbol TrueType font ii ttf-oriya-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for the Oriya language ii ttf-punjabi-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for the Punjabi language ii ttf-tamil-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for the Tamil language ii ttf-telugu-fonts 0.4.7.1 Free TrueType fonts for the Telugu language $apt-show-versions ttf-freefont -a ttf-freefont purge ok not-installed No unstable version ttf-freefont 20051102-2 etch ttf-freefont not installed $firefox --version Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.4, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2006 mozilla.org Can others reproduce this problem?
On retrospect, I suspect that the problem could be the additional fonts present in ~/.fonts directory which might be conflicting with ttf-telugu-fonts. Unfortunately I rm -rfed the ~/.fonts directory, so I cannot go back and check for sure. But anyway, now the websites like http://te.wikipedia.org/ are working perfectly fine.
Previously when I got it working, I purged all the ttf-* packages before installing the ttf-indic-fonts. So my previous conclusion that "~/.fonts is the cause" might not have all been correct. thanks raju -- http://kamaraju.googlepages.com/cornell-bazaar http://groups.google.com/group/cornell-bazaar/about -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
