No, leave it in the .diff.gz.  It's generated stuff, so just run
autoconf/make prior to dpkg-buildpackage, and it will end up in the
.diff.gz.  Trying to unpatch after an autotools change will just
create a huge mess, and it will break.  The .diff.gz is the simplest
and most reliable way of doing it: when you re-run autoconf/make, it
just replaces what was already there.

BTW, I'm going to be doing some powerpc testing for upstream, so I
