After modifying my /etc/defaults/cdrecord thing started working again. I'm not sure why, given that what I had before had worked OK for a long time, but I think it may have been incorrect and perhaps it was incompatible with a more recent version of cdrecord. At any rate I think you can close this bug. Sorry to have troubled you.
