Before I do so, however, I would like you to try out another
feature, since you are already using initramfs:

Check the content of /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume, or if that
does not exist, then either upgrade to the latest iniramfs-tools and
create it with the following line, or append that line to
/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf:

  RESUME=/dev/hda2

(or whatever your swap is)

Now do `update-initramfs -u` and reboot without the kernel command
line to let the initramfs take care of starting the resume.

If that works, maybe you can document this as the preferred method
(because it's automated) for modular kernels, whereas your method is
needed for non-modular (monolithic) kernels?
