Tested cpio compiled from source cpio_2.6-11 on sarge box. No longer segfaults, but does give /usr/libexec/rmt not found error, which linking to /usr/sbin/rmt on tape server fixes. Adding "--libexecdir=/usr/sbin" to the debian/rules rule for building Makefile (ca. debian/rules line 28) also fixes the problem, I strongly suggest this -- or something similar. (I suppose ideally cpio would have an option for specifying the remote rmt command.)
