It could be nautilus runnning, you're right. Make sure that xfdesktop is running when using the switch, and remember to save your session at logout, so it'll be started the next time (and not nautilus). Try: ps aux | grep nautilus pkill nautilus xfdesktop & Does it fix the problem ?
