No, not at all, that's what I'll do in Debian as well.

'dpkg -P postgresql postgresql-client' does the trick. My current
version mentions this in the debconf note.

Strange.. What does 'apt-cache madison postgresql-client postgresql-7.4' say?
(I assume they are available, and some stupid Conflicts: is breaking it,
though.)
