 *Configurable* irritating colours: at least the decision to add colours
 to your init sequence is taken centrally.

 One example why it's a desirable thing to have is for the splash screen
 integration: usplash only needs to hook into lsb-base to display init
 messages on the splash screen instead of the console.  Of course you
 could argue we don't have usplash in Debian yet (too bad), I'm sure you
 see the point though.   :)
