Someone else (see http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=10206105&forum_id=5838) has also seen this error and suggested a simple htcheck fix so apparently it is an upstream (htcheck) problem. I have access to only two boxes (Debian stable and Ubuntu dapper) and have only encountered the problem for Ubuntu dapper (because stable obviously does not have mysql-5.0). Nevertheless, the htcheck versions are essentially the same for Debian testing, Debian unstable, and Ubuntu dapper. Thus, I am virtually positive the problem will show up on Debian testing and unstable so that is why I am reporting it here to warn other Debian users they almost certainly must stick with mysql-4.1 until the htcheck fix for mysql-5.0 propagates from upstream.
