hmm - further investigation of the display issues shows that using HIDDEN_CHAR for the filler when extending a code due to VS16 isn't handled as nicely as I'd thought (lots of work is to resolve that, and I'm busy with ncurses). There are other fixes since #403 which are being held up by this. So... I'm changing the filler to a blank (which means that selection in VS16 would select the filler as a separate character), but (since I added an option already with the VS16 feature off by default), doing that should resolve the important issue here. -- Thomas E.
