(which use Cantarell) disappeared and were replaced by boxes, then the Gonme terminal crashed (disappeared) when I tried to open a new tab and could not be restarted. The Gnome session became unusable (white error screen). On a console terminal not used by Gnome I could see (ps -AHf) that Apt was still working using /dev/pts/1. When it had stopped working I could continue the upgrade process on the console. GDM and Gnome only became usable again after ‘apt full-upgrade.’
