It handles media downloading (torrenting and HTTP streaming), video transcoding, and format conversion to ensure browser compatibility. The service runs as a system tray application and exposes an HTTP API for Stremio clients to connect to. The service acts as a companion app primarily designed for Stremio Web but can also work with other Stremio clients. It provides essential features such as automatic video conversion to browser-compatible formats using FFmpeg, torrent streaming capabilities, and hardware-accelerated transcoding support. The service listens on localhost ports 11470 and 12470 by default. Written in Rust, stremio-service is a rewrite of the older Node.js-based streaming server, offering improved performance and resource efficiency. It supports multiple platforms including Linux (Debian, Fedora, Flatpak), macOS, and Windows, and can be deployed as a Docker container for remote streaming server scenarios.
