I use (and install for clients) OpenOffice.org v2.0.2. It is the version you can download from their website in .rpm (eg ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.openoffice.org/localized/fr/), converted to .deb via alien.

Ok, so the problem is that the recent security upgrade makes it crash in several situations. For example, when opening a .doc file and saving it as a .odt.
I believe the recent security upgrade broke the binary compatibility in some way. http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=37963 describes a similar issue.
