I think that Debian, the universal operating system don't have need
only of a pretty wallpaper or splash from a "genius" artist. Debian is
maintained and developed by many peoples, the packages are an example
of quality produced with the community collaboration.

A sporadic and spontaneous contribute is good but don't solve the
problem to create a coherent and quality look and feel or a strong
identity for the new desktop users for a long time, an error example
is a GDM theme that I've created some time ago, I'm created and tested
it on my computer with my 1024x768 resolution but with others
resolutions it didn't work well and for time reasons I don't update
it.

In the same way I think that the contest is not the just way because
the perception of what is pretty or not is relative and subjective the
very problem is the quality of the user experience that can be solved
only with the community collaboration, Tango is a good example of high
quality "collaborative artwork" based on some guidelines.

For these reasons I'm propose a new project to solve this "bug", some
months ago I had already started it
http://alioth.debian.org/projects/debianseyes/, this is the first
theme draft/example/incomplete to populate it

P.S.
Sorry for the bad english....
