There was initial work on turning much of mailutils' functionality into loadable modules 7-10 years ago. With 1:3.19-1 this appears to have been completed. In particular notice /lib/<triplet>/libmu_*.so.9.0.0 for each module.
I would actually prefer for every module to be a distinct package (#1121221), but merely splitting "auth" out would remove the concerning dependencies.
