Can you please set aside the current configuration and try manually by doing (as root) mv /etc/postgresql /etc/postgresql.old mv /var/lib/postgresql /var/lib/postgresql.old mv /var/log/postgresql /var/log/postgresql and do this > pg_createcluster 8.1 main --start again? If that works, can you please tar up these three directories and put them somewhere? Also, what's the output of 'mount'? Do you have any file system corruption?
