In an X11 terminal:

    $ BEEP_LOG_LEVEL=999 beep
    beep-log: Verbose: log_constructor
    beep-log: Verbose: beep_driver_console_constructor
    beep-log: Verbose: beep_drivers_register 0x55bbc3d2e6a0 (console)
    beep-log: Verbose: beep_driver_evdev_constructor
    beep-log: Verbose: beep_drivers_register 0x55bbc3d2e700 (evdev)
beep: Verbose: evdev driver_detect 0x55bbc3d2e700 (nil)
beep: Verbose: b-lib: could not open(2)
/dev/input/by-path/platform-pcspkr-event-spkr: Permission denied
beep: Verbose: console driver_detect 0x55bbc3d2e6a0 (nil)
beep: Verbose: b-lib: could not open(2) /dev/tty0: Permission denied
beep: Verbose: b-lib: could not stat(2) /dev/vc/0: No such file or directory
beep: Error: Could not open any device

Same thing in a virtual console (ctrl+alt+f1):

    $ BEEP_LOG_LEVEL=999 beep
    beep-log: Verbose: log_constructor
    beep-log: Verbose: beep_driver_console_constructor
    beep-log: Verbose: beep_drivers_register 0x55ae4ff216a0 (console)
    beep-log: Verbose: beep_driver_evdev_constructor
    beep-log: Verbose: beep_drivers_register 0x55ae4ff21700 (evdev)
beep: Verbose: evdev driver_detect 0x55ae4ff21700 (nil)
beep: Verbose: b-lib: could not open(2)
/dev/input/by-path/platform-pcspkr-event-spkr: Permission denied
beep: Verbose: console driver_detect 0x55ae4ff216a0 (nil)
beep: Verbose: b-lib: could not open(2) /dev/tty0: Permission denied
beep: Verbose: b-lib: could not stat(2) /dev/vc/0: No such file or directory
beep: Error: Could not open any device

Adding my user to the "input" group fixes the issue, but this is considered a
bad idea by
/usr/share/doc/beep/PERMISSIONS.md.gz.

PERMISSIONS.md.gz explains how to set up up a udev rule, but I'm not familiar
with udev and it feels
like I'm running Arch. I love Debian where I don't have to mess with stuff like
this, because
something will break eventually at the worst possible time when I forgot
everything I
learned about udev.

I know the PC speaker as a concept is almost dead, but I'd really appreciate if
I could use mine for
as long as possible.
