first of all thank you for your patch and my apologies for the late reply. 

I reviewed the patch and had to make some small adjustments to make it compile.
The patch still required gladeui-2.0 but the package will be removed from
Debian in the near future eventually. If I just remove gladeui-2.0 from
PKG_CHECK_MODULES in configure.ac, the package compiles again.

However my biggest concern is the maintainability for the future and that such
changes should be made upstream. I know that 

        https://github.com/rodolf0/wbar

has not seen an update in 12 years but it would make sense to fork the
repository and implement the new changes there.

Then I also noticed that a couple of GTK functions are deprecated and will be
removed in the future. I would apply the changes
 
   a) if those deprecation issues were fixed as well
   b) all changes are "upstreamed" / made publicly available outside of Debian,
      so that other people can benefit from them
