Hi there, patch author here.

The first version of the patch was indeed incomplete, I had just tested
it on JSON and standard output modes, not XML. FWIW, XML went from an
ill-formatted output to a segfault on empty dirs, but other codepaths
weren't affected.

The v2 of the patch (attached), posted on the LP bug as well as to the
upstream email address, solves this problem.
