The GNOME team would like to do the GNOME Shell 49 transition soon. To simplify the transition, we want to complete the glib 2.86 transition first. This transition is bigger than usual since we are also bundling the update to gnome-session and gdm3 since there are breaking changes this time. There is also a gjs mini transition (only adds gjs and polari to the list) that we figure we might as well do together since it requires commits found in gnome-shell 49 anyway. Affected packages ------------------------- Source uploads are needed for these packages, all owned by the Debian GNOME team: - gdm3 - gjs - gnome-initial-setup - gnome-kiosk - gnome-remote-desktop - gnome-session - gnome-settings-daemon - gnome-shell - gnome-shell-extensions - mutter - polari - xdg-desktop-portal-gnome I believe the Budgie maintainers want to upload budgie-control-center & budgie-desktop at the same time so we will need to ping them. Packages to be removed -------------- I expect that we'll remove a high number of GNOME Shell extensions from testing for this transition. The porting work is often simple but I don't want to be personally responsible for the growing list of extensions that I don't use. And it's early in the forky cycle. https://udd.debian.org/cgi-bin/bts-usertags.cgi?user=pkg-gnome-maintainers%40lists.alioth.debian.org&tag=gnome-shell-49 glade needs to be removed to complete the gjs transition. It will probably be auto-removed or removed from ftpmasters before this transition completes anyway. Other Info -------------- These trackers are good although they don't include the extra packages we are uploading this time: https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/gnome-shell-49.html https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/auto-gjs.html As we have done previously in both Debian and Ubuntu, I expect that we will need a manual hint for the transition to migrate. I guess the package relationships are a bit complex for britney to automatically understand. This transition removes the GNOME on Xorg sessions. I expect that window managers (afterstep, openbox-gnome-session, etc.) will need manual changes if they want to continue to run with the assistance of the gnome-settings-daemon & gnome-session utilities. As long as they aren't part of the Debian tasks, I don't think this should be a blocker for this transition. On behalf of the Debian GNOME team, Jeremy Bícha
