Your assumption is correct.

It looks like the configure check is not aware of libmongoc2 (the name
of the new package which pkg-config/pkgconf should find).

I can't work on this just now, but I should be able to get to it in a
few hours and provide a patch. In the meantime, the patch I prepared for
nextepc (and which I forwarded to #1112311) is a good place to start, if
a fix/patch is needed before I an get to it.
