Ok, I bet this is because your /root directory is 700. If you do the same in /tmp it will probably work:cd /tmp apt source --compile smartlist So, it seems that being root is not the problem, but instead the permissions of directories on which you try to build the package.
You are totally right, thanks a lot! I have opened an MR to fix sbuild here: https://salsa.debian.org/debian/sbuild/-/merge_requests/200This should probably be part of the next stable update once it is reviewed.
