Closing since we can’t do much on the plasma side. If the drivers you’re using are crashing all graphical programs being run when they are upgraded I don’t think there’s much we can do.
The general recommendation for running major upgrades is to do them in a virtual console program [1] so you can easily continue with the installation from any terminal emulator or kernel VT.
