I've been experiencing the same problems and tracking this bug/issue for some time.
I wasn't going to send an email but I just noticed that on the day that apache-ssl crashed for me, Robin Edgar sends a email into this bug. I will include my my apache error log and syslog from about that time. I don't know if it will help. I will be glad to post anything else that is needed. Last time apache-ssl crashed, I had the same exact experience with the SIGUSR1 signal reporting and then nothing. Only it doesn't happen very often.
