I highly encourage avoiding GPL-like licenses when the original software
is not using GPL. In your case, the original software is using BSD-3-Clause.
Could you re-license your Debian packaging work to be the same as the upstream 
one?
That could avoid a lot of potential future issues.

Of course, this is just a suggestion. If you are not willing to do so, please
let me know and I can still sponsor your package as-is.
