Package: spamassassin Version: 3.1.1-1 Severity: normal Severity Note: Although this is a documentation issue, I've left the severity at normal because it may affect people's ability to get spamd running.
As far as I can tell, the fact that one must edit /etc/default/spamassassin to enable spamd is not documented outside of that file. Although the current README.Debian refers to the file, it doesn't do so in a way that seems likely to get this fact across. Currently: ------------------------------------------------------------------ Configuring spamd ----------------- spamd, the daemonized form of spamassassin, is generally the preferred way of running spamassassin. Please read man spamd and README.spamd for more information. Init scripts are provided with this package in /etc/init.d/spamassassin. To change the command line options, please edit /etc/default/spamassassin. -------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a possible revision: ------------------------------------------------------------------ Configuring spamd ----------------- spamd, the daemonized form of spamassassin, is generally the preferred way of running spamassassin, though there are some security issues. Please read man spamd and README.spamd for more information. spamd is disabled by default, but you can set ENABLED=1 in /etc/default/spamassassin so that the supplied /etc/init.d/spamassassin will start the daemon automatically. You can also adjust other spamd options through /etc/default/spamassassin. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Of course, more info on how to deal with the security settings and the different possible configurations would be good, but that's considerably more ambitious. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (50, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-686-smp Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages spamassassin depends on: ii libdigest-sha1-perl 2.10-1 NIST SHA-1 message digest algorith ii libhtml-parser-perl 3.54-1 A collection of modules that parse ii libsocket6-perl 0.19-1 Perl extensions for IPv6 ii perl 5.8.8-4 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction Versions of packages spamassassin recommends: ii libarchive-tar-perl 1.28-1 Archive::Tar - manipulate tar file ii libmail-spf-query-perl 1:1.999.1-1 query SPF (Sender Policy Framework ii libnet-dns-perl 0.57-1 Perform DNS queries from a Perl sc ii perl [libmime-base64-perl] 5.8.8-4 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii spamc 3.1.1-1 Client for SpamAssassin spam filte -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
