Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist X-Debbugs-Cc: rauf...@web.de * Package name : localsend Version : 1.17.0 (2025-02-20) Upstream Contact: Tien Do Nam (main developer) i...@tienisto.com * URL : https://localsend.org/ * License : Apache 2.0 Programming Lang: Dart Description : LocalSend is a free, open-source app that allows you to securely share files and messages with nearby devices over your local network without needing an internet connection.
This package is a replacement for popular proprietary local file exchange systems (e.g. Apple AirDrop®, Samsung QuickShare® etc.) with the additional benefit of being extremely lightweight, available for all major platforms, and - of course - free as in freedom (and as in free beer, actually). It requires only very little permissions/configuration/settings regarding the local network, so that virtually 99% of wired and wireless networks will work out of the box with zero additional configuration - including most corporate and public networks. It would really foster the FOSS ecosystem if this was installed on every (human operated) machine, beause the app is very intuitive and in many ways better than any of its proprietary alternatives or FOSS products that can be "misused" to provide local file exchange between "mutually-unknown" systems (from e-mail to rsync, ...). Upstream provides .deb-Packages (and > 20 other installation methods for all kinds of systems) at https://github.com/localsend/localsend The latest couple of .deb releases work 100% smoothly, at least for me on three different machines running Debian 12 and Debian 13 in sessions with some kind of systray available (Gnome, Xfce, ...). Compilation requires flutter and a few libraries, which are availablein Debian 13 as far as I can tell. The app is mostly developed by one single person, but very actively so. Plus, there are thousands of stars, copies and forks on GitHub. Probably someone with Debian onbaording experience could "adopt" this package very easily.
