Hello Andrew,
to be honest, I don't know. However, I cannot find any evidence that the
project has been dropped.
For me, the main purpose of this software is the support of stubby which
is from the same people that provide getdns. The last commit on Github
for stubby was last year in March. Perhaps it might be that there is not
enough time because NLnet Labs' main focus is on the development of
Unbound now. But what do I really know.
Anyway, the current version of getdns and stubby in Debian is from
February 2020 and version 1.7.3 is from December 2022. So isn't it better
to upgrade than to stick with version 1.6.0 and missing almost three years
of development?
Best regards,
Thomas

Do we have any evidence that upstream is paying attention to this
software anymore? The last commit on github seems to be January 2023.
