OK, you should know that marking mariadb-server on hold also prevents it from getting stable updates and security updates, which don't happen frequently. An easy work around is to also mark mariadb-plugin-provider-bzip2 and whatever plugins you have on hold, or just upgrade all of them.

Now the database started as expected * My tentative conclusion is that the mariadb-plugin-provider compression packages have a very tight version dependency on the server packages and that they should only be upgraded in concert with the server packages, with matching versions.
