Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * On our riggs mariadb-server and mariadb-server-core are placed on
hold to avoid unintended updates and restarts.

OK, you should know that marking mariadb-server on hold also prevents it from getting stable updates and security updates, which don't happen frequently. An easy work around is to also mark mariadb-plugin-provider-bzip2 and whatever plugins you have on hold, or just upgrade all of them.

[...]

   * I removed the hold on the mariadb server packages, replaced the
compression config files with the original ones and dist-upgraded.
Now the database started as expected

   * My tentative conclusion is that the mariadb-plugin-provider
compression packages have a very tight version dependency on the
server packages and that they should only be upgraded in concert
with the server packages, with matching versions.

We could make plugins Depends: mariadb-server-core (= ${binray:Version}).
