Yes, makes sense to me, even though I guess that backport will have to
wait until after trixie is released?
So, I'm not sharing the sensor, but I do share the ugly USBIO and need
to drop in too few patches to enable camera on Dell 9440.
Generally having USBIO as dkms package sounds reasonable (better than
nothing), but as I wrote in [1], I'll need a bit more underlying changes.
I would be OK with taking care about some extra patches, IMHO otherwise
Debian will get stuck on most of laptops of current generation without
cameras.

Or maybe I should simply include a patched version of the ov08x40 driver
along with a dkms package of https://github.com/intel/usbio-drivers .
Not realle a DD so this is purely theoretical, but would that be allowed
or is there a policy preventing dkms packages from replacing mainline
drivers?
I realize that I'll have to cheat to make dkms auto-install it - but
that can be done with a file in /usr/share/dkms/modules_to_force_install.
FWIW, the usbio-drivers dkms package will be required for ThinkPad X1
Carbon Gen 12 camera support anyway until Intel, or someone else, makes
those drivers suitable for mainline.
