Dear Maintainer, this bug originally reported against ntp.org ntpd seems to be still present with identical issues also in ntsec.org ntpd. Summary from ntp.org upstream report (not written by me): >When ntpd starts, it immediately resets the kernel status field to STA_PLL >without STA_UNSYNC, before the clock is actually synchronized. This may >mislead applications that use ntp_gettime() to check if the clock is >synchronized. > > Also, the maxerror and esterror fields are set to 16 microseconds instead of 16 seconds. ntp.org upstream report: http://bugs.ntp.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3434 Redhat report (with some additional details): https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1493452 Reported upstream to ntpsec.org, including rebased patch that works for me: https://gitlab.com/NTPsec/ntpsec/-/issues/848 Best Regards, Björn Weinehall -- System Information: Debian Release: 12.10 APT prefers stable-security APT policy: (500, 'stable-security'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 6.1.0-32-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=C.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=C.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages ntpsec depends on: ii adduser 3.134 ii init-system-helpers 1.65.2 ii libbsd0 0.11.7-2 ii libc6 2.36-9+deb12u10 ii libcap2 1:2.66-4 ii libssl3 3.0.15-1~deb12u1 ii netbase 6.4 ii python3 3.11.2-1+b1 pn python3-ntp <none> ii sysvinit-utils [lsb-base] 3.06-4 ii tzdata 2025a-0+deb12u1 Versions of packages ntpsec recommends: ii cron [cron-daemon] 3.0pl1-162 ii systemd 252.36-1~deb12u1 Versions of packages ntpsec suggests: ii apparmor 3.0.8-3 pn certbot <none> pn ntpsec-doc <none> pn ntpsec-ntpviz <none>
