Would you be able to start digiKam in a terminal with the debug variable 
active and attach the messages to this bug report:

 export QT_LOGGING_RULES="digikam*=true"
 digikam

It might be unusable for your system or class of systems, e.g. wayland.  But 
it does work on many systems, so I will downgrade the bug to important.
