I installed the program on my notebook which in principle has the same
system version as the desktop, and there birdfont also works...

Could the kernel be the culprit??? I avoid to reboot the system because
sometimes it fails for unknown reason (perhaps a hardware problem?). So on
the desktop the kernel is older than on the notebook, on which the
program works.

This is undoubtfully the issue on your OS. Please make a full
system update, reboot the system and see if the problem persists.
If yes, please feel free to reopen the bug report and let me know.
