locales-all . That would allow users to uninstall it if they really
want to. apt tells me that locales-all has a download size of 11 MB
and an installed size of 241 MB. I think if Debian were particularly
concerned about the space that translations take up, Debian could
implement something like the language packs that Ubuntu uses. I don't
think we are particularly concerned about the size of the default
GNOME desktop in Debian right now.

Hi Jeremy,

a user bumped into the same issue in #debian IRC as you described, and I think this would be a good solution. The average user doesn't care so much about a few hundred MB if that means that the language selector works.
