During that upgrade some texlive*doc, tex-common and some latex-cjk-chinese-arphic-bsmi00lp latex-cjk-chinese-arphic-gbsn00lp latex-cjk-chinese-arphic-gkai00mp latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab packages are upgraded. And indeed this is how it is written in the release notes, although I've never done it this way. However I'm still wondering, why xetex and pdftex stop working in generating format files after these packages were upgraded. Hilmar
