So the question is whether the Fonts team is ok with distributing
pre-built Adwaita fonts for now which would allow these fonts to be
included in Debian 13 for GNOME by default, or whether we insist on
building them from source.
I have been in a similar situation with the fonts-firacode package
before. The package was in contrib, because I could only distribute the
prebuilt binaries, although the sources were available. It wasn't before
the 1.206+dfsg1-1 upload that I could rebuild the fonts from their
sources in the packaging process and the package was accepted in Debian
main. Maybe you still remember it, you are even explicitly mentioned in
the debian/changelog entry.

It would be sad to have to go through the same route for the
fonts-adwaita package. In the end, the fonts are free software, the
sources are available, and it is merely our own fault that we cannot
rebuild them with the tools that we currently have.
My proposal would be to allow the package in Debian main, file a bug
with RC severity against it requesting the fonts to be rebuilt from
sources, but tag that bug with trixie-ignore.
