Hello Eric,

Let's try to narrow it down.  Can you please try "lsinitramfs" on the initrd 
image that your kernel is supposed to be loading at boot?

lsinitramfs /boot/initrd.img* | grep -i microcode | head

Also, can you check whether you are using "initramfs-tools", or "dracut" to 
generate the initramfs ?

dpkg -s dracut  initramfs-tools
