Usually only server admins would bother to use such tool, to share the map with their players. On a server the recommended backend is PostgreSQL for larger servers[1], therefore I think it would make sense to also enable this backend in minetestmapper.

I have rebuilt the package after adding libpq-dev as build dependency, no other changes, and it is sufficient to enable the backend. I have built it for bookworm and tested on a server and was able to successfully generate maps.

This only drags libpq5 and dependencies which are few and weights very little in term of storage space.

Would you consider adding support on the official package?
