I can reproduce the bug. The problem is that the application only support the following locales: English, Italian, French, German, Spanish. Looking into the sources, it seems that wxMaxima choose English as default locale. This should be changed to C or POSIX. This can be modified in the ~/.wxMaxima config file, setting the "language" parameter I will make a patch for this and notify wxMaxima author. In the meantime, the simpler way to fix the problem is to add en_GB to the list of your locales. You can do this easily with the command "dpkg-reconfigure locales".
