Hi, the fix was already applied and solved the bug when show pre-release as major of final release:

  backintime (1.5.3-1) unstable; urgency=medium
...
    * d/watch: correct sorting pre release versions (Closes: #1087686 
<https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1087686>)

When the final version comes out, within a few days (when the scan is updated), it will correctly show the final version and not the rc. Should be working because I already used the same method in memtest86+ (https://salsa.debian.org/debian/memtest86plus/-/blob/debian/master/debian/watch?ref_type=heads) and worked.
