I'd certainly be interested to read about your position regarding items 2 and 3!
Sorry for the late reply! I owe you an explanation, so here it is: The purpose of this package was to show how troublesome was to keep a package policy-comformant without any helper package. While the changes you suggested might be seen as an improvement in a general sense, they make the package even more complex than required, so for the purposes of showing the complexity of not using debhelper, I would feel that we would be cheating, as the package was already complex enough as it was. There was also the current trend, by which people are losing interest in anything other than building the package just once in a disposable environment. As an example, last time Lucas filed bugs regarding "does not build source after binary build", he did not make the bugs serious anymore. They even were "minor". Having said all the above, I believe this package does not make much sense today, and it would be better to concentrate our efforts in documenting how to do things, not how not to do things. So: Would you mind if I ask ftpmaster to remove the package? (I think it is about time) Thanks.
