I've fowarded the issue to upstream and got an answer:

<snip>
That crash is a divide-by-zero error caused by a faulty DVI. The magnification
is too large.

I have fixed the error by checking for division-by-zero, there was another
similar error waiting for release. I can't seem to upload the new release
today but as soon as I can, this will happen.

The faulty DVI will still generate a fatal error, but no crash.

If you are unable to generate a correct DVI (if this was actual production,
not testing for bugs), you can always manually set the magnification to render
the file, like so:

dvipng -x 1000 crash.dvi

This will work in previous versions too.

I'm not sure, which version he's speaking about, I guess 1.18.
