I noticed that this bug seemed not to be occurring with newer Debian versions, and I tracked the fix down to the Patroni 2.1.5 release notes:
* Explicitly shut down SSL connection before socket shutdown (Alexander Kukushkin) Not doing it resulted in unexpected eof while reading errors with OpenSSL 3.0. So the bug was fixed a couple of years ago. -- Ben Harris, University of Cambridge Information Services.
